How to Stop a Puppy from Biting & Chewing

Addressing a puppy's biting and chewing behaviors is an essential part of their early training to ensure they grow into well-behaved adult dogs. Puppies explore the world through their mouths, and it's natural for them to nibble and chew on objects. However, we can redirect these behaviors to more appropriate outlets.

Firstly, consistency and patience are key. Whenever your puppy starts biting or chewing on inappropriate items, redirect their attention to appropriate toys or chews. Have a selection of chew toys made specifically for puppies, such as rubber toys or puppy-safe bones, and encourage them to focus on those. Whenever they engage with the appropriate items, reward them with praise and positive reinforcement.

Secondly, engage in regular play and exercise with your puppy to release excess energy. Puppies often bite and chew out of boredom or as a means of seeking attention. Scheduling play sessions and daily walks will help them burn off energy, reducing the likelihood of destructive behaviors.

Finally, establish clear boundaries. If your puppy does start biting or chewing on inappropriate objects, calmly say "no" and remove the item from their reach. Avoid using physical punishment, as this can create fear and anxiety in your puppy. Consistently reinforcing positive behavior and redirecting their attention to appropriate toys will help them understand what is acceptable and what is not. Over time, with patience and consistent training, your puppy will learn to curb their biting and chewing tendencies and become a well-mannered and well-adjusted member of your family.
